Virgin Islands National Park

November 18, 2018 - November 25, 2018

Trip Navigation

The island of St. John in Virgin Islands National Park needs your help more than ever! The island was devastated from Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the summer of 2017. Volunteers will be working on hiking trails as well as historical ruin maintenance and repairs within Virgin Islands National Park. Volunteers will work to maintain and stabilize park trails that have been severely damaged from hurricanes. Work will entail lots of grub-hoeing with picks and out sloping. Give back in a tropical paradise!

Area and Attractions

The island of St John is in the northern Caribbean where the waters are beautiful and crystal clear. Volunteers will work under blue skies , and near white sand beaches covered with palm trees. Volunteers will learn about the history of the island and have an opportunity to explore historical ruins. The campground has equipment available for various watersports and afternoons will be free for island exploration, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and shopping.

Accommodations Description

The Volunteer Base Camp has five 12 X 16 raised tent platforms with nice cabin style tents each with 4 large cots leaving plenty of gear space. The site has 3 picnic tables and the outdoor cooking essentials. Cooking utensils and plates are provided. Mosquitoes are bothersome to some so volunteers should be prepared with bug repellant for day and night use. A gravity fed (1000 gallon tank) shower and port-a-potties are available on site. Please note that we do not advise anyone to drink tap water, bottled water only. Volunteers should bring their own work gloves, sheets or light blanket for sleeping/pillow, and personal gear. ***Please Note*** If you have been on the USVI trip before, the campground at Cinnamon Bay no longer offers water sports rentals or any other facilities such as bathroom and restaurant. The public campground was in a state of complete devastation from the hurricane. However, the Friends Volunteer Camp has undergone significant improvements and is completely self-sufficient and independent from the public campground.

Travel

NO Airport Pickup provided for this trip. The closest airport is on the island of St. Thomas. Volunteers will then need to take a ferry to the island of St. John and a cab to the campground from Cruz Bay.
