Inks Dam National Fish Hatchery

This will be a new trail developed at Inks Dam National Fish, a facility in Highland Lakes area of central Texas. The facility is located along the Colorado River (of Texas) directly below Inks Lake and at the northern end of Lake Lyndon B. Johnson. The trail would be built along the Colorado River following the shore to allow greater recreational usage of facility. The development of this trail will allow greater access to the river that is underutilized by fisherman, bird watchers, nature lovers, hikers, and recreational boaters.

Area and Attractions

Inks Dam National Fish Hatchery (NFH) is located approximately 60 miles Northwest of Austin, TX in the beautiful Texas hill country. The facility borders the Colorado River below Inks Lake and is nestled between Inks Lake State Park and Longhorn Caverns State Park. Inks Dam NFH has 30 ponds ranging in size from 0.25 acres to 1.5 acres with a total of 28 surface acres for fish production. The entire facility has approximately 150 acres. Outdoor recreational opportunities abound in the local area allowing you to follow your passion. Numerous activities are within 2 hour drive of Inks Dam NFH including, lake tours, Canyon of the Eagles park, winery tours and wine tasting, the Alamo (2 hrs), Austin, Fredricksburg, San Antonio Riverwalk (2hrs), and Highland Lakes.

Accommodations Description

The Hatchery has numerous tent camping spots, two RV's that have power, water, and holding tanks, and a park model mobile home that has a full kitchen and bath- so there will be a variety of accommodations for the group to split up. There are public restrooms located within 200 yards the camping spots, and a shower is available in the maintenance office. Volunteers should bring their own tent (if you want to camp), sleeping bag/sleeping pad, cup/bowl/mug/eating utensils, and personal gear.

Travel

Airport pickup provided from Austin–Bergstrom International Airport. Airport pickup and dropoff times will be sent to registrants when the trip is confirmed.
