Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge

Volunteers will be working on trail maintenance on the Knobby Knees and Great Egret Ridge Trails. Tasks include removing fallen vegetation and limbs from the trail and trimming vegetation that could scratch or pose other inconveniences to hikers. Additional tasks including starting construction on an additional 3 miles of new trail. Trail building consists of building a trail 2-5 feet wide while looking for features to highlight and the best footing for the trail. Limb and vegetation removal will be the main focus.

Area and Attractions

Everything is bigger AND better in Texas! Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge is located in the floodplain of Liberty County in Southeast Texas. The habitat is bottomland hardwood. The area hosts bayous, oxbow lakes, privet swamps, and cypress-tupelo swamps. Houston, TX is located 45 minutes away. Galveston is one hour away and has a beach as well as Moody Gardens, an aquarium, and zoo. Big Thicket National Preserve, Sam Houston National Forest, Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge, and Lake Livingston State Park are all within a one-hour drive from the lodging site.

Accommodations Description

Volunteers will be staying in a cabin. The refuge will provide a truck for official use to drive between the worksite, office, and housing. Our bunkhouse has three rooms with eight twin beds. Amenities include a full kitchen (stove, oven, microwave refrigerator, sink, coffeemaker, pots, and pans), bathroom (shower, flushing toilet), and laundry facilities (washer/dryer). A TV with local channels is present. This facility is located at Champion Lake, our southernmost property. Canoes and kayaks will be present for complimentary use. Volunteers should bring their own sleeping bags and personal gear.
